In the final concert of their series, the Czech theme comes to the fore with two works. Dvorák’s American quartet is one of his most-loved pieces. It is a cheerful work, full of melody and infectious rhythms, probably influenced by negro songs that Dvorák had heard while living in America, but it also expresses his nostalgia for his homeland.
Janácek’s quartet, Intimate Letters, is a highly emotional and passionate piece, reflecting the composer’s ardent friendship, in his sixties, with a much younger woman. The same surge of late creativity inspired his delightful opera The Cunning Little Vixenand the Sinfonietta. The programme opens with a quartet that Haydn wrote for a violinist friend.
